Ceres, The goddess of Fertility
Demeter was the sister of Zeus and the child of Cronus and Rhea. Her name means "Barley-Mother" or "Mother Earth". She is known as the goddess of fertility. Her other name is Ceres (Roman) and sometimes Deo.
Demeter is often seen holding a stalk of grain or corn, sometimes a torch, a crown, or sceptre. Sacred to her are livestock and agricultural products (with the emphasis on corn), poppy, narcissus and the crane.
By the mid 70's, the boom of coffee shops took place in Japan, and Gifu was a part of this boom. From dairy products delivery, Ceres naturally took this orientation and started supplying the coffee shops. In order to deliver the best products to its customer, Ceres started to roast its own coffee. To look after the coffee, and guarantee a good material, the goddess of Fertility was chosen as the company name.
